Mindfulness in Self-Growth

What does this mean for me?

Mindfulness can help and enhance personal growth because part of self-care is becoming a better version of ourselves. Sometimes, we forget that we should be improving ourselves because we get caught up in other parts of life. But becoming aware and acknowledging areas of improvement, is just the beginning of self-care and self-compassion. Not only do we need to acknowledge it but we should also take action. I believe that by being open-minded, we judge ourselves less and can become the best version of ourselves. Ways that mindfulness can help us improve is by reducing the negative thoughts, getting out of our comfort zone and a shifted perspective on life. That means that we are aware of ourselves and being mindful of how we attend to the present moment. This can help us feel more confident in who we are and can help us achieve life goals!

What Has The Research Shown?

Personal Growth

Personal growth and one's goals can look differently for everyone but mindfulness can be a “powerful tool” to help everyone achieve those aspirations of who they wish to become. (Mindfulness App, 2025). This ultimately enhances our self-awareness which can help target areas of weaknesses. Ways that weaknesses can be improved is by doing activities and practices that help foster growth, staying consistent and tracking the progress. Doing reflections can serve as self-check-ins, help see where our mindset is at and be able to see the improvements over time. Past experiences can make an individual feel stuck and feel unable to move forwards, but mindfulness practices can help improve that. “Integrating small mindfulness exercises into daily routines can significantly enhance one's quality of life.” (Mindfulness App, 2025). Connecting mindfulness with growth ultimately can help an individual become intentional with what they do. Many practices help with growth, but being consistent and holding yourself accountable is important. Being mindful and aware can also help savor moments that you enjoy. For example, creating a gratitude list or expressing gratitude towards something / someone can help you recognize what aspects of life make you feel fulfilled.

Positive affirmations

Positive affirmations have a positive impact on the brain. Doing affirmations repeatedly can become reality and your brain starts to believe what you think. Positive affirmations are more likely to work when you connect them with your goals. (Cascio, O'Donnell, Tinney, Lieberman, Taylor, Strecher, Falk, 2015). Aligning goals with affirmations can lead to a positive mindset because you are more likely to be optimistic and resilient. This can help boost behavior and will start to see improvements in daily life if affirmations are done consistently. A negative mindset can be due to the way that we speak to ourselves. That is why it is important to be kind to ourselves and be graceful. In order to reverse the negative thoughts, you must re-wire your thoughts. (Crisis Text Line, 2024). Our brain thinks and believes what we tell ourselves, so practicing affirmations daily can help create new thought patterns. It is critical that we pause before we criticize ourselves.

Creativity

Mindfulness can enhance creativity and become open minded, which leads to becoming more open to taking risks. Individuals are also more likely to not care as much about what others think, due to the fact that they are open-minded and willing to try new things. (Henriksen, Richardson, Shack, 2020). Always trying new things and being okay with failure is what builds confidence and resilience in an individual. This takes time and practice because this isn’t something that comes naturally for some people. Not everything is perfect but being okay with that is the first step to becoming free minded. This can help build perseverance, which is what helps you push through difficulties and not to give up. The individual must learn to shift perspective and mindset and an example could be seeing anything negative as an opportunity to learn and grow. You may even notice that you think outside the box. Creativity can help you tune in with your feelings and thoughts. For many, this is an outlet and a way to be present in the moment.

What Practices Can You Do?

The practices I have performed have been daily positive affirmations (up to 5x week). I kept track of this on a Google Doc. My practices and activities targeted areas of weaknesses for me which helps with self-improvement and growth. I tried aligning my practices with my goals that I had at the beginning of the school year like improving on myself, becoming more creative and being able to control my emotions.

Practices and activities:

Experience with positive affirmations

I did daily positive affirmations and wrote them down in my notebook, at least five times a week. Every week I wrote down new affirmations and each day, I would write them down in a different order. In my opinion, I felt like this helped because I was writing and saying the same ones, just out loud in a different order, which helped me accept them. I noticed that at first I didn’t see any difference but started noticing it as I started to practice the affirmations. I would catch myself doing things out of my comfort zone unconsciously and would realize this after. But this didn’t occur until the end. I have been making myself little notes at my office as my reminders to promote growth within myself. Something I wish I could’ve done differently for this was instead of just saying them outloud, instead say it in front of a mirror. I think this could be very helpful. Overall, I think this is an easy practice and comes naturally once it is practiced consistently. This is definitely one of my favorite practices. Experience with art

Doing creative practices like art was very fun and definitely helped enhance my artistic side. This was an area that I wanted to improve on and I will say that I feel like I was able to fulfill it by doing the art activities. My least favorite one was the doodling piece since this wasn’t very easy for me to do since doodling has no structure or rules. I tend to thrive off of structure but this did help me do something I normally don’t do. I think this would be best to do when you may feel very emotional, since it can help you release those emotions by drawing random things. I also did try a lego set, which taught me patience (as other practices did too) and I did it all by myself, which I have never done before. I did like this activity and this is recommended for someone to do if they are not very artistic but like following rules. This has a bit of structure but also explores creativity and making mistakes along the way. I would rank this one as second. My first favorite activity was painting. I truly enjoyed it and this is something I did when I was younger, so I connected this with positive memories. I felt relaxed and didn’t even have to play music in the background due to the fact that I connected all my five senses while painting.

Experience with new experiences

I did do a few new things, out of my comfort zone and was mindful when I was doing them. I paid attention to how I felt before, during and after. I noticed how I felt during all these stages and noticed that for almost all of the experience, I was scared and hesitant. During it I felt a bit nervous but felt confident in myself and knew it was confidence showing through because I was able to believe in myself. I knew that I was doing it well and was even able to control my emotions during the experience. Afterwards, I noticed that I was stressing for no reason and realized that I could have done the experience a long time ago, since it was truly not bad. I then self reflected and realized that sometimes I should just go at it and know that it will be okay. I have also learned to realize that mistakes are part of the process and that is how we learn. In addition, converting the bad experiences into good ones in unique ways. This has helped me change my perspective and outlook in life. This would be third place.

Experience with gratitude

I have also done a gratitude list, which I have also done a lot outside the project. I really do enjoy this and I think that this is best to do when you may feel down because it will definitely lift your mood up. This has helped me become more appreciative, savor the moment and be present when I am doing experiences that I love. This would rank in the middle (fourth) just because this is such a great practice but it isn’t something I did a lot for this specific project.

Experience with journaling

Journaling can really help individuals get their emotions on paper, feeling, and thoughts. This can be done when someone is experiencing high emotions or to just reflect on themselves in the moment. I would say that I would rank this in last place (fifth) since this was mostly helpful when I felt very high emotions or when I wanted to do check-ins.

Practice!

These practices do not require much time and many in 30 minutes, with some taking an hour. Setting time during the day to do these activities and practices can be beneficial as it can also teach discipline and leads to consistency. It is important to take time to do practices that foster growth and self-improvement since this is part of self-care.
Action Item:

My Personal Experience

At first with positive affirmations, I didn’t see much of a difference within the first week and noticed a little after the second week. I noticed my thoughts weren’t so negative and instead my approach was that “I can do it”. This has helped me see chores in a positive way and not the “ugh I have to do them”. Same thing with school, I used to say “Ugh I have to go to school” but now I have been telling myself, "I'm privileged to be able to go to school”. The gratitude practice has also helped me be more appreciative which has helped me shift my perspective. This has also contributed towards my confidence and have noticed that I don’t hesitate to do new things, for example at my internship. As for the creative aspect, I have noticed that I have more ideas when it comes to decorating the boards at work. My ideas come much more easily and even see the beauty and potential in anything. I have really noticed that all of these things combined have helped me approach life in a graceful way. I have let go of the past, and have tried not to dwell on past experiences. I have realized too that I haven’t held grudges, which has contributed towards my growth.

Overall, I will say that my activities and consistency helped me achieve those goals. I feel that I am in a better spot than where I was before. Although I had little knowledge on this topic from a previous class, actually doing the practices helped me foster my growth. Mindfulness has helped me gain self-confidence and has helped me have a better mindset.
